Spam: How to Limit How Much You Get

0

Spam sometimes known as junk mail, is a common annoyance even before email existed. Spam emails can flood our inbox and cause you to miss vital work/school related messages. In this article, we’re going to learn how to limit the amount of spam you receive.

How to Reduce the Amount of Spam You Receive

  • When purchasing items and they ask for your email, give them a “spam” email address. A “spam” email address is a dedicated email solely to signup for websites and online stores. This will mitigate the amount of unnecessary spam and ads that you will receive on your personal email address.
  • Verify your social media accounts do not have your email address publicly available. Take them out of your bio or descriptions as malicious users can sign you up for annoying spam lists.
  • When creating a new account on a website, verify that any of the boxes asking for you to subscribe to their newsletters or offer lists are turned off.
  • If you continue to receive spam from a certain email address you can always report their emails as spam and block the sender to stop them from sending any more.
  • If you want to unsubscribe from a company’s email list, go onto their website and manually find the unsubscribe from the newsletter/offers link as opposed to clicking on the link in the email

Personally, I prefer to have a secondary email address dedicated to solely spam emails so that they don’t clog up my personal email address. There is an easy way to report spam emails on your Fordham email address as well. You may report potential phishing and malicious emails with one click from your Fordham Gmail safely and in real-time with the Cofense Reporter Gmail add-on.  On web browsers, the Cofense Reporter button (which looks like a fish) will appear on the right side of the page in Gmail, and on mobile devices, it will appear below the opened email. You can learn more about Cofense here: https://itsecurity.blog.fordham.edu/2018/10/04/introducing-cofense-reporter/
