Protecting Your Privacy Online

While surfing the web, users should be aware of how to shield their devices from cybercriminals. Below are some pointers on how to protect your privacy online.
  • MFA or Multi-factor Authentication: Enabling MFA can help guarantee you are the only one getting into your accounts. MFA provides an additional step to login to any account and should be set up using a trusted device such as your phone or secure application. For more information, see our article Multi-Factor Authentication.
  • Choose passwords wisely: Your password should be something only you know. Along with the site’s password requirements, the phrase should be complex and not easily guessed. Be sure to never reuse passwords for different sites as well. For more information, see our article Creating a Strong Password.
  • Make sure your devices and other services are updated: Keep your software up to date with any new version releases for your device. By allowing automatic updates in your device settings, you can ensure you are helping protect your information even when you forget.
  • Be cautious of suspicious activity: If anything raises suspicion while online, trust your gut and review it before opening an attachment or clicking a link. Find another way to access the information like opening a new browser and going directly to the company website. If you must click, verify the link was sent from a trusted source.
  • Think twice before posting: Double-check your post before sending it out. Make sure the information you are sharing does not put you or others at risk. For more information, see our article, Staying CyberSafe on Social Media.
  • Check your app permissions: Visit your account’s privacy settings and personalize them to a level of sharing you are comfortable with.
  • Connecting to public WiFi: When joining any wireless hotspots in public areas such as hotels or restaurants, be sure that the establishment owns the WiFi. Cybercriminals can create false WiFi options to steal your information. Even with verified networks, avoid accessing any banking or medical sites to prevent anyone from viewing sensitive details.
